i run a six pack charter out of panama city beach on weekends and whatever days the construction job lets me have, and for three years i did it out of a tired 23 foot bay boat that was never the right tool once you got past the pass. wanted a 280 Outrage with twin Verado 300s. everybody who fishes the edge out here told me the same thing, that hull with those motors gets you to the snapper spots and home when the afternoon chop comes up.
the used ones through the brokers in florida were running 212 to 220 with hours all over the map and every one of them had a story. a guy on our dock who bought his Grady online told me to look at rubiautosales.com. they had a 2020 280 Outrage, twin Mercury Verado 300s with about 310 hours, Simrad NSS evo3 at the helm, T-top, on an aluminum tandem trailer, listed at 185. i figured something was wrong with it.
called them. the guy on the phone knew what VesselView was, which was a good start. he told me up front the port trim tab actuator was weeping, one of the livewell pumps was dead, and the bottom paint was due. then he sent a pile of photos, a cold start video with both motors in frame, and screenshots of the engine hours off VesselView so i could see they matched the listing.
i was not wiring 185 grand to a website on a phone call. i hired a SAMS accredited marine surveyor for a hull and engine survey, about 900, and a Mercury certified tech to pull the VesselView history and do a compression and leakdown on both motors. rubi set up a sea trial with the surveyor on board and had no problem with any of it. the surveyor put a moisture meter on the transom and the deck and it came back dry. compression was within a few psi across all sixteen cylinders and leakdown was under 8 percent on every hole. the findings were the weeping actuator, the dead livewell pump, the bottom paint, and a tired anode on the starboard motor. that was the whole list.
bought it. the hull title and the trailer title both came clean and the USCG documentation transferred without a hitch. i used a boat transporter who brought it to me on its own trailer for about 1,400. four weeks in, two trips out to the edge so far.
anybody else in here running a boat off the rubi lot? curious how yours turned out.
